Helen

“I THINK YOU should try eating something, honey,” Helen said.

Lana’s fever from last night, though not as hot, still made her shiver even while lying in the cave beside the small fire separating her and Helen.

“I’m not hungry. Can I just have some water?”

Helen got the canteen and gave it to her.

“How do you feel?” Helen asked.

“Not as bad as before.” Lana drank, covered the bottle, and gave it back to Helen. “Just thirsty all the time.”

“I know, but can you at least try to eat a piece of fruit?”

“I don’t want a piece of fruit, Helen. I’ve told you that.”

“You haven’t eaten all day. Can you at least do it for me?”

Lana licked her dry lips as she studied Helen.

“How would you feel if I were sick and not eating? What would you think?”

“Okay, Helen. You win. I’ll eat something,” Lana said, annoyed.

Helen gave her a fruit and was about to sit beside her.

“Oh no you don’t,” Lana snapped. “Get back over there. We can’t both be sick at the same time.”

“I won’t get sick. I rarely do.” Not taking heed to Lana's warning, Helen sat.

“Do it for me, then,” Lana smiled.

Helen shook her head from left to right, returned to her spot and lay on the leaves, her head on her jacket, her eyes on Lana eating the fruit.

“When I was young,” Lana said.

“You mean younger,” Helen teased.

“I’d roll my eyes at you if it didn’t hurt.”

“I’m sorry, honey. I’m listening.”

“When I was young, anytime I got sick, my mom would ditch work and make me chicken soup.” The light gently played against Lana’s smooth, pale face as she reminisced. “Not the soup from the can either. Soup from scratch because it’s healthier.” She sniffed. “She’d cut up chicken breast and vegetables.” She gestured with her hand. “And Frannie would stay home from school too, and we’d all bundle together on the couch and watch TV for hours and hours.”

Her eyes lit up staring into the flame as those memories replayed in it. Helen could see Lana’s memories too; her mom making soup, the TV, and the sofa they sprawled on cuddling together. All Helen wanted was for Lana to be happy.

“She’d be sober the whole time. I used to think maybe we should get ill more often,” she laughed softly, but her subsequent words were bitter. “I hated her.”

Tears filled her eyes when she looked away from the flame to Helen. Helen’s body instinctively rose to go to her, protect and shield her.

“Now, I can’t stop thinking about her. That fucking lunatic bitch, she’s not leaving my fucking brain,” Lana continued. “I miss her. I miss my mom.” She cried openly, and Helen was geared towards making her way to Lana. “Stay where you are. I’m fine.”

“I’m fine too. We’re both fine, so...”

Every time Lana laughed now, it made Helen that much more comfortable, knowing she was overcoming her illness.

“What?” Helen asked.

“You make me laugh. And you’re such a fucking liar.”

“I’ve never lied to you. Not once.”

“You said you can sing.
